TUFTS PhD Student on Visa was captured by the Immigration Authority, said the school

A PHD student at Tufts University in a visa was captured by immigration authorities outside Boston on Tuesday night, according to school and student lawyers.

Student, Rumeysa Ozturk, is a Turkish citizen, according to his lawyer, Mahsa Khanbabai.

“Rumeysa Ozturk is a Turkish citizen who maintains valid F-1 status as a PhD student at TUFTS University,” Khanbabai said in a statement. “Rumeysa was heading to meet with friends to break the fasting of Ramadha on March 25 when he was detained near his house in Somerville, MA by DHS agent.”

“There is no demand for Rumeysa to date that we know. I submit a habeas petition that requested that he not be moved from the Supreme Court district given by the judge [Indira] Talwani last night, “according to his lawyer.

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesman for the Department of Domestic Security said: “Rumeysa Ozturk is a national graduate student and TUFTS University, giving special privileges to be in this country to visas. DHS and ICE Investigations that are not visited by Americans. Supporting terrorists who killed Americans is the reason for the issuance of visas to be ended.

ABC News has reached immigration and customs enforcement.

Ozturk is registered in the ICE database as “in custody” and seems to be held at the Ice Processing Center in Basile, Louisiana.

In a new statement to ABC News Wednesday night, Khanbabai said he had just learned “a few hours ago” that his client had been sent to Louisiana.

“More than twenty -four hours after his arrest, Rumeysa has not been processed to his final detention facility and so far, I cannot talk to my client,” he said.

On Tuesday, a federal judge issued an order that prohibited DHS from eliminating Ozturk from the Massachusetts District without giving notification to the court. It is unclear when he was transferred to Louisiana.

In an email to students on Tuesday, the school says it is told that the status of the visa “ended,” and tried to find out more information.

“The university has no knowledge of this incident and does not share information with federal authority before the event, and the location where this happened was not affiliated with Tufts University,” the school wrote.

“From what we have told you next, the student’s visa status has ended, and we are trying to confirm whether the information is correct. The university has no additional information at this time about the causes or conditions of students’ understanding and trying to learn more about the incident,” continued, in part.

“Following the University Protocol, the University Advisory Office will help connect students with external legal resources if the individual asks for our help,” he added.
