Trump has made a number of claims about LA protests. This is the context.

President Donald Trump has painted Los Angeles’s gloomy picture since protesting immigration attacks and customs enforcement breaks down during the weekend.

He has repeatedly said that the city will burn without military intervention and that there is a “rebellion” paid and “criminal invaders” seizing the city, which has turned into “anarchy.”

However, local leaders present a more complex picture of scenes on the ground.

While they acknowledged that there were some violence and violations of the law, they said that the local government could control the situation in a limited area where small battles broke out.

In some cases, in reality, ABC News observed protesters who were selfish when they spoke against Trump’s policy.

It is possible that social media feeds narratives that have developed around protests.

Some social media users have pushed fake images from protests, using images from George Floyd’s protests, films and video games and even videos produced by AI, to increase similar claims that the city is a mess.

The following are some of the claims made by the president and the context around the claim.

Claiming: On Tuesday, Trump said Los Angeles was “surrounded.”

Context: The incidence of violence has been limited to relatively small areas in the downtown of Los Angeles-around 10 blocks.

The protesters were allowed to line up but were not allowed to set foot on the highway; However, on Sundays and Tuesday, some protesters did that and temporarily block traffic.

Lapd said that more than 500 people had been arrested on charges related to incidents related to protests on Thursday night. In comparison, LAPD said around 3,000 were arrested after the first three days of George Floyd’s protest, which occurred in all cities in June 2020.

Claiming: The White House, during the briefing on Wednesday, highlighted the pictures and videos of smoke that were seen during protests and fights with law enforcement.

Trump suggested on Tuesday that “a lot of cars ride smoke and fire. You have many bad scenes,” and that if the national bodyguard and marines are not deployed “you will make the city burn now.”

Context: Most fires occurred on Sundays during the hottest protest. No buildings were burned, according to law enforcement.

Many fires are in large garbage tubes, sending smoke into the air. At least five Waymo vehicles, which are autonomous driving cars, are seen covered in graffiti and engulfed on Sundays.

The protesters threw stones into the California highway patrol vehicle in 101, destroying the window. The other protesters threw the stone into a police car from the overpass.

One of the most serious arrests was the two men who were charged with federal criminal complaints because they had Molotov cocktails, the Department of Justice said.

On Wednesday, LA District lawyer, Nathan Hochman, announced a number of serious accusations, including someone suspected of distributing fireworks to the protesters and littalized and threw them to officers.

Da also accused a man allegedly riding his motorcycle to the officer, injuring one. Still, Hochman said, “We estimate that there may be thousands of people who have been involved in legitimate protests.”

On Tuesday, nine LAPD officers were injured. It is unclear whether there are injured military members.

Claiming: Trump has repeatedly blamed Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democratic leaders for letting the protest out of control and take praise for extinguishing daraning with the National Guard, which was activated without Newsom’s approval.

“California is familiar with this kind of riots, we manage it regularly and with our own law enforcement,” he said.

The governor has repeatedly condemned violence and said those who caused damage or hurt anyone would be prosecuted.

Mayor La Karen Bass has also been vocal in its opposition to violence and destruction carried out during protests.

“If you will entertain violence, if you will try to take over the freeway, then you will suffer the consequences of doing that,” he said on Sunday.

Bass issued a Tuesday night after the arrest of the day before. Bass said the curfew for the one square mile area can be continued for “a few nights.”

Although Trump mobilized thousands of members of the National Guard and Marines to the city, they were not yet active in extinguishing protests. The guard, on the contrary, has protected federal buildings and protects ice agents from raids.
