The suspect's grandfather in the Idaho fire extinguisher who was deadly speaking

After a deadly ambush to respond to firefighters at Coeur D’alee, Idaho, the suspect’s grandfather spoke with ABC News on Monday, sharing his sadness for those who were killed and injured in the attack.

Law enforcement officials identified wess rooley as a suspected armed person in an ambush on Sunday that made two firefighters killed and others injured.

He was found dead on Mount Canfield after the hunt for hours with a rifle nearby, said the Sheriff Office of Koottenai Regency. Officials believed he shot himself after the attack.

Speaking by telephone in a recording interview with ABC News, as seen in “World News Tonight with David Muir,” a man who described himself as the grandfather of Wesss Roley’s father, Dale Roley, said he was surprised to hear that his grandchildren were named as suspects in deadly ambush.

“No one wants to think that their son or grandchild will do this,” said Dale Roley.

The authorities shared social media posts from the suspect Wess Roley during a press conference in Hayden, Idaho, 30 June 2025.

Dale Roley said those who were killed when responding to a brush fire, according to the officials, deliberately began before the ambush, “I don’t deserve it.”

“I feel more sad to those who are killed than I do for him because they don’t -they don’t deserve to get it. That’s only, they don’t fight. This is not part of their job description.”

He said the last time he talked to Wess Roley was about four weeks ago – when he said his grandson lost his cellphone and seemed to never replace it.

Dale Roley said his grandchildren went to work for a tree company in Idaho about a year ago, but he did not know which company.

“He has his own apartment. He is fine,” said Dale Roley. “He has money. He used to walk in the park all the time. I know that because he has told me about it.”

Dale Roley said that after Wess graduated from a high school in Arizona, he came and lived with him in Oklahoma for almost nine months before Wess moved to Idaho, where his father lived.

That’s where Wess started working for a tree company, said Dale Roley, added that in the last six months, his grandson seemed to be “a kind of loner.”

Two people were killed after firefighters were ambushed by an armed man, or many armed people, when responding to a brush fire at Coeur D’alee, Idaho, said officials.

In a statement on Wednesday, Family Lawyer Wess Roley Justin P. Whitenton shared a statement on the name of the family, saying they “intend to work fully with the authorities in finding answers.”

“At this moment, we, the Wesss Roley family wanted to offer our most sincere condolences to their families whose lives were brought and to the Coeur D’Alene community in general,” the family said in the statement.

“There are no adequate words for this tragedy and unlimited losses suffered by those affected by this shooting. We do not understand why this happened or how this happened,” the family added.

“Our hearts and spirits are destroyed for those who are lost and injured, and because of our own loss,” said the statement.
