London and Rome – The Pope “rests well at night” and wakes up shortly after 8 this morning, the 20th day at the hospital, because the conditions remain stable and the prognosis remains reserved, according to the Vatican.

The whale needs medical intervention in the middle of two episodes of “acute respiratory failure” on Monday, Vatican sources told ABC News.

The whale has no episode of breathing failure or bronchospasm on Tuesday, according to the Vatican.

Pope Francis remains “alert, in collaboration with therapy and oriented,” said the Vatican press office, The Holy Tung, said. He underwent “high flow oxygen therapy and respiratory physiotherapy” on Tuesday, said the Vatican.

He continued the noninvasive mechanical ventilation overnight until Wednesday morning “as planned,” according to the Vatican.

The Pope, 88, is released from noninvasive mechanical ventilation and continued receiving additional oxygen through the nasal tube, said the Vatican source Tuesday. He no longer wore a mechanical ventilation mask, a device that pumped oxygen into the lungs, the source said.

Wednesday marks Ash Wednesday, the first day of Prapaskah, which is the season of prayer, fasting, and giving 40 days. It ends with a holy week, which leads to Easter Sunday, the most important day in the Christian calendar.

The Vatican said last week that Cardinal Angelo de Donatis, the main correctional and Pope delegation, would replace Pope Francis at the liturgical celebration on Wednesday for Ash Wednesday in Rome.

Cardinal will read the homily prepared by the Pope and the text will be released today, said the Vatican.

Francis, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, was treated at Gemelli Rome Hospital on February 14 and was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. The Pope suffered a bronchospasm attack on Friday, Church officials said.
