Archbishop Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich said the election of Pope Leo XIV was suitable for the current political landscape, especially when considering the Trump government.
“I think he will help complete and complement our political agenda. He will talk a lot about immigration, because he knows about the suffering of people and the real needs they have for a better life,” Cupich said on Sunday for ‘this week’ Martha Raddatz Co-dashor. And he also knows that people in Oceania, for example, where – the surface of the sea that rises only – get – flood the islands, where people try to escape, he sees drug trafficking that occurs in Central and South America where there are weapons from the United States that go there. He knows that those people need a choice. And he will call, I think, as experienced by people who do not exist.
Pope Leo XIV made history on Thursday as the first American Pope. Pope, who was previously Cardinal Robert Prevost, was born in Chicago but lived in Peru for about 20 years before finally being tapped by the late Pope Francis to serve in the Vatican.
During the pap of Leo Xiv, he was expected to face difficult questions about the church – including President Donald Trump’s actions.

Pope Leo XIV is an alumnus of the Catholic Institute of Villanova University. President Villanova Rev. Peter Donohue said that Pope Leo XIV represented the United States and the world.
“According to me [Leo XIV] Really, you know, this is someone who has an American spirit but also has a global spirit, “Donohue said” this week. “
Here is more highlights than Cupich and Donohue interviews:
Cupich in the current political landscape
Raddatz: And this morning, of course, the Pope spoke to people. And I was interested because he said, I brought in the heart of the suffering of the loved ones. He also talked about how sad he was about what happened in the Gaza Strip. What tells us about this Pope?
Cupich: Well, he took the words of Pope Francis that there was a world war that occurred little by little. And that was something for him to be a voice, as he said, for peace at the beginning of his announcement when he was presented to people. He really cares about that. And I will only state that here you have 133 cardinal out of 71 different countries can make decisions within 24 hours. Hopefully it is a sign of unity that can be adopted by the whole world.
History of Global Cupich on Pope Leo XIV
Raddatz: Talking about what the meaning of being an American as a Pope, considering that he has lived in Peru for years and has a global vision in a certain way.
Cupich:: And he is a peru citizen. He has a peru passport. I think it’s important and recognizes. My hope is that he now has a new platform to re -introduce what is always called the church in the case of his social justice agenda and that will – it will give other opportunities to see both what Francis said. But now in, in words and voices of Americans who talk like Americans, I think it will be very strong in the future.
Cupich about the scandal of sexual harassment in the Catholic Church
Raddatz: And, Cardinal, I have to ask you about this, the survivors of those who were harassed by the priests, as they were mentioned, wrote an open letter this week attracted attention to sexual harassment in the church and saw how – before he became a pope, that – the prevost handled several alleged accusations. How do you think he will handle the history of this church in that matter?
Cupich: Well, I know from talking to him and also seeing the handling of his case, that he is very committed to the norms placed by Pope Francis and he cares about them. He has a meeting record with the victims, reports things to the authorities, conducting an investigation, and also reaching – to heal the victim. I’m sure he will move in that direction. And everything I see shows that he is committed to that.

Donohue about the importance of Pope Leo XIV
Raddatz: And clearly, many were made about him to be an American. I want you to describe the part of his American. Why is it so important that we have American whales?
Donohue: I think for American Catholics, that is something we never thought of going to happen. Every time people talk about it – always like – – You know, America is a very strong country. The church is always a little suspicious of having, you know, pres-, the Pope becomes an American. But I think for Leo – I’m still trying to get used to calling him – it is something he must have raised in America. He is the original Chicago. He loves Chicago, his family, his brother still lives there. He returned here whenever he could. He has friends in the area. But the experience of his world is not really in America. So, he – he served a very short time here in the United States as an Augustian. Most of the time is in Peru or in Rome, so his experience is – when he grew up, his experience after graduating from college and of course after being ordained as a priest – always far more global, far more international.
