Only the Black World War II Unit received a gold medal in the congress

The only black-female unit on duty in Europe during World War II received a gold medal on Tuesday in the United States capitol.

Together with Bipartisan Congress leaders, speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) Presented that honor, which is the highest civil honor given by the congress, to the family of the Unit Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams Earley. More than 300 descendants and family members from six Triple Eight battalions were present for the ceremony, according to Johnson in his speech.

“This extraordinary story has captured bright imagination, now inspired books and films, raising the awareness of millions of Americans, who had just heard and shared this extraordinary story,” Johnson said.

Earley’s children, Stanley Earley III and Judith Earley, received awards from DPR and Senate leaders.

During their service in 1945, the Battalion 855 members did not get the hubbub or recognition of their achievements. This medal occurs after years of campaigning for the ignored battalion that many people say set an example for black women in the military.

The congress chose 422-0 to give the 6888 award with this honor in 2022. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.), Who joined the law, spoke at the ceremony, praising the “unsung hero” who received the recognition of 80 years later.

This honor marks the latest developments in the recognition of units that have passed. A monument was founded in 2018 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in honor of them, and the 6888 was praised unit meritoriously by the US Army in 2019.

The Netflix Tyler Tyler Perry film, directed about the unit, starring Kerry Washington, received an Oscar nomination for the best original songs.

Retired Colonel Edna Cummings, who shared a number of admissions at the ceremony, directed a documentary about the unit in 2019.

“This history has now restored the desire of service, as evidenced by young girls who are now dressed as members of the six Triple eight,” he said.

Democrat House Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) shared several words at the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan celebrations in the current political climate.

“We gathered here today to salute these mighty veterans. We salute the ingenuity they do in battle,” said Jeffries. “We salute the obstacles they solve in the system designed to encourage them to the side. We salute their pioneering spirit and the path they paved to others.”
