Crypto businessman was arrested for allegedly torturing a man for weeks: Police

A Crypto businessman was arrested on Friday after a tourist from Italy told the police that he was tortured in the luxury apartment of a suspect in New York City for more than two weeks, according to the police.

The alleged victim, 28, told the police that he arrived in New York from Italy on May 6 and went to the suspect’s house, which was identified by the police as John Woeltz.

Woeltz, 37, allegedly took the man’s passport and tortured him before he could escape Friday morning, ran to the traffic enforcement officer to get help, the police said. The victim allegedly was taken to the hospital, said the police.

The suspect made an initial performance in court on Saturday where he was detained without guarantees of the allegations of abduction, attacks, and imprisonment that violated the law. He did not submit an application.

The victim allegedly told the police that Woeltz and others, who had not been arrested, defeated him, used electric shock and hanging him from the lekage after he refused to give his Bitcoin password, according to criminal complaints.

Police footage was displayed at the scene on May 23, 2025, in New York, where a Cryptocurrency businessman allegedly tortured a man for weeks.

When the police responded to the house, they found a number of polaroid photos from the alleged victims who were bound and tortured in the Soho suspect Apartment, as well as several existing torture items, according to police sources.

A weapon was found at home, said the police.
